Owning a dog can be an amazing a loving experience for many people. Dogs can be expensive at times though. Trips to the veterinarian can be costly. There are definite ways to save money on your dog and this blog will go over some of these tactics.
1. Buy online or off-brand. When veterinarians subscribe certain prescriptions for your dog, many of them can be found online. Always check online or in a store for off-brand products before going with the veterinarian prescribed medication.
2. Ask other dog owners where to go. You may know some friends that have dogs. When becoming a new dog owner, it is important to ask others where they go for their dog’s treatment. Some people may let you know to stay away from certain places that tend to push more expensive treatments or products on you.
3. Keeping up on your dog’s dental hygiene. Bad breath in dogs can be a sign of a number of health issues, from gum disease to problems in other parts of the body. Poor dental hygiene also can cause your dog discomfort, so regular brushing with special toothpaste is usually a good first step, but you might want to read up on dog dental care or consult a vet during a check-up.
4. Making your household safe for your dog/puppy. When you bring a baby into your home for the first time, you baby-proof your home for the safety of the infant. The same should be done for dogs. Dogs are prone to chewing or eating things that can land them in front of a vet (wires, curtain cords, small items such as socks and children’s toys, medications) and outside (toxic plants including daffodils, household and automotive chemicals such as antifreeze).
5. Keeping your dog on a healthy diet. If you feed your dog cheap, low-quality food, you’re likely to pay for it down the line. Vets and pet experts say a higher-quality diet, however, can have a range of health benefits, from better breath to decreased joint pain in older animals. Advocates of raw dog food swear a more natural diet leads to better skin, fur, teeth and behavior, and fewer digestive and joint problems. 6. Scheduling regular check-ups. Taking your dog for a regular check-up can save money in the long run. For instance, making sure your dog has all the necessary vaccines and parasite treatments will help keep it happy and healthy, and decrease the likelihood that you have to return to the vet for more expensive (and possibly unpleasant) treatment later on.
If you follow these steps, the cost of owning a dog will significantly drop and your dog will be able to live a happy and healthy life with your wallet being full and happy in the process as well.
